"19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:" 2Peter 1:19
Peter had just recounted his experience with Jesus on the mount of transfiguration, when He was glorified, and they heard a voice saying “this is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased”. When this experienced happened to Peter James and John, it was of such a magnitude that, the Bible says that they “they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.”
That certainly is an experience that won’t soon be forgotten; years later, not only did Peter still remember it, but considered it sound experience to remind the believers about, to assure them that they had not followed cunningly devised fables, as such was the accusation for many years after the death of Jesus; and the accusation still lives today with some. There will always be skeptics, as the Bible has stated - there will be mockers in the last days; in the light of disbelief it is always good to remember our history, for truly the hand of Omniscience can be seen guarding His people through the ages, especially as the longer time passes the more confirmed the Scripture has become, to such an extent that one could argue – in this age of reason and science, which are good things – but some would seek us to think that there is a dichotomy between science and religion; in such an age, much has been discovered that has put Bible on solid grounding, things which in years past were mocked, but the Bible has constantly been shown to be a veritable source of truth, not just morally, but historically as well.
After having mentioned his experience, Peter goes on to state something that is truly an amazing assertion. Peter says, yes we saw Jesus, yes our hands have handled Him (1John 1:1), but over and above that there is another anchor for our faith, and that is in the prophecies of the Bible. How so one may wonder? Without going into depth the answer is simply this – the ability of foretelling the future is a quality God uses to distinguish Himself from false gods (Isaiah 46:9-10). When one studies the prophecies, and looks at what God has foretold, and sees it came to pass as He said, that is a strong reason to believe; Jesus put it this way – “And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it come to pass, ye might believe.” John 14:29
